Great Land is a piece of rural life in an urban setting that allows people to gather together, lie on the  ground and nourish the body and soul.

The clod is contained in a large rectangular tray that is open on two short sides. The artificial features of the container, with its wooden structure and surface finishing, create a strong visual contrast with the bucolic landscape housed inside it.

The piece of land is characterized by an interchange of slopes and flat parts, which allows multiple experiences: entertainment and dynamism on the stage and water-featured areas, and relaxation between the more intimate valleys.

The vegetation is authentic and diverse: trees with thick foliage and portions of lawn are placed in alternation with more luxuriant areas, characterized by herbs and grasses.

Picnic blankets, like rectangular pixels arranged on the lawn, become a visual reminder of consumption and suggest a more spontaneous enjoyment. Some can be freely arranged, according to visitors’ needs.

WHAT
Great Land is a landscape section served on the MaXXI forecourt. An excerpt of rural life that suddenly appears in an urban set, to let us meet as after a harvest, lying on the ground to feed the soul and restore the body.

WHERE
The clod of soil stands at the center of the esplanade, isolated from the perimeter of the area and indifferent to altitude changes. A thickness distinguishes it in relation to the context, to remark the existence of an external world and an internal one inside the project. The first is dedicated to the discovery of the scene, the second is based on the experience and on the exploration of the finally conquered territory.

HOW
OROGRAPHY– An alternation of hills and flat parts draws the landscape and suggests different uses. Entertainment and dynamism in the stage  or water features areas, relaxation between the more intimate valleys.

VEGETATION – The taste is rustic, spontaneous, exuberant. The vegetation becomes progressively more sparse in  flat areas, eroded by the man action. The margin between the grass area and the wild area is uncertain, variable.

PIXEL – picnic cloths are the means to tell human intervention: like colored pixels lying on the lawn they become visual measurement of resource consumption and suggestion for its most spontaneous enjoyment. Divided into fixed and movable elements, the first draw on a regular grill areas intended for the stage and the water features. The second allow free arrangement, pandering to visitors’ desires of relaxation.

WATER - Through special nozzles hidden under some fixed pixels, the water gushes out merrily from the soil. As a resource for survival it changes and becomes a funny raw material of life.

LIGHT/SHADOW – Lighting and shadow systems, integrated into rows of wooden poles, support lines of lights and a fabric that shelters from the sun, thus providing at any time of the day the right setting for the convivial experience.

EDGE/ENTRANCE – The exhibition has a strongly three-dimensional character, marked by variable height that highlight the limit for enter to the experience and draw a skyline for the surrounding context.  To enter, it is sufficient to cross the slopes in the flat  areas or conquer it through simple ladders, external objects next to the clod to reach the highest parts and enjoy unexpected views.

VIEWS – From Via Guido Reni the discovery is progressive. The mystery of the object laid down on the forecourt find a solution in the contrast between the dark tones of the clod thickness, the bright colours of the dominating nature and the soft and desaturated colours of the Museum external flooring.  From the inside, the MaXXI geometries are framed by the colour green of the landscape. The city is suddenly seen with different eyes, the point of view is reversed.
